Platform Optimisation Engineer

Location : Dallas, TX

G-Research offers remote working within the State of Texas, bringing people together in the office for a number of days every month.

G-Research is Europe’s leading quantitative finance research firm. We hire the brightest minds in the world to tackle some of the biggest questions in finance. We pair this expertise with machine learning, big data, and some of the most advanced technology available to predict movements in financial markets.

This role is based in G-Research’s new office in Dallas. Opened in 2022, the Dallas office is a key infrastructure hub where we work on the latest cloud technologies in a cutting-edge environment.

The role

G-Research is looking for a Platform Optimisation Engineer, with a proven track record in performance and optimisation, to join our Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) function.

Our work centres on predicting financial markets, to which end we consume and ingest petabytes of data and deploy hyper-scale compute.

In this new and challenging role, you will focus on extracting maximum value and performance from our many platforms, ranging from HPC to database technologies. To cope with ever-growing demands, those platforms must perform at their maximum under extreme conditions – every percentage improvement contributes to the success of the business.

You’ll join our PaaS function, which is responsible for software and platform engineering, as well as operations excellence for multiple on-prem managed service platforms and in-house built solutions. These include batch compute, Spark, NoSQL and distributed event technologies, many underpinned by our growing Kubernetes estate.

You will work closely with a number of teams and stakeholders within our PaaS function, with responsibility for implementing tooling and frameworks that will enable us to make data-driven decisions on where best to focus tuning and improvement efforts. Beyond PaaS, you will also work closely with various development teams, quantitative researchers, IaaS engineering, and security.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Defining and building a framework to enable performance benchmarking, profiling, tracing, tuning, reporting and integrating into automation pipelines
  • Providing platform tuning opportunities with, for example,  Kubernetes, Spark and Cassandra
  • Developing a suite of performance libraries
  • Cross-team training on performance tuning and analysis
  • Presenting your work to the company through talks and presentations
  • Keeping up-to-date on industry trends in this space

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • An enthusiastic Performance Engineer who lives and breathes optimisation.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the use and interpretation of performance capture tools, with the ability to select and utilise the right tool for the job (e.g. atop, slabtop, mpstat, flame graphs)
  • Experienced Linux Engineer and performance specialist
  • Expert in kernel and OS tuning
  • Expert knowledge of low-level tuning parameters and when to use them, as well as the ability to understand their impact on live systems
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Advanced use of static performance tools for tuning
  • Advanced understanding of networking and storage layers, and awareness of their impact throughout the stack
  • Strong Python and Go programming skills
  • Build automation experience, to enable lab environment setups which replicate our estate
  • An understanding of CI/CD pipelines, with the ability to incorporate optimisation degradation checks
  • Expert in-depth knowledge of cause and effect between applications and underlying systems
  • Exposure to bare-metal, virtualised and containerised environments
  • Strong analytical mind and background
  • Excellent customer engagement skills and ability to communicate with different levels of the business

Why should you apply?

  • Market-leading compensation plus annual discretionary bonus
  • Informal dress code and excellent work/life balance
  • Paid time off, including sick days, military leave, and family and medical leave
  • Summer working hours, equivalent of 4 additional days of paid leave
  • Generous 401(k) plan
  • 12-weeks’ fully paid parental leave
  • Medical and Prescription, Dental, and Vision insurance
  • Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance
  • Employee Assistance and Wellness programs
