Compute Engineering Analyst – Placement Year

The role

This is an exciting opportunity for a student studying a Computer Science or Computer Systems-related degree to join our Compute Infrastructure Engineering Support team as part of a placement year in industry.

This team is responsible for the compute systems used by our research and business functions.

You will spend the year as a crucial member of the team, troubleshooting, advising and providing key input into streamlining current monitoring and automation methods.

This is primarily an operations role where you will be working alongside a mentor and experienced members of the team who will provide continuous support and guidance, enabling you to learn rapidly and contribute effectively to the business.

This role will be based in Central London, starting on the 12th of July, 2021.

The successful candidate will be a part of a team that deals with a large range of technologies in a fast-paced environment spread across multiple sites.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supporting the rest of the team of four who are managing the current infrastructure
  • Creating, using and updating scripts, in particular with PowerShell/Python to automate tasks
  • Researching and implementing new technologies in line with key business objectives
  • Support-focused work, triaging an inbound queue of requests/queries/logged issues, but also working directly with Senior Engineers to assist with their project work
  • Using Jira and Confluence to detail changes made and update system documentation
  • Infrequent weekend work, supporting maintenance and upgrades

This role will suit someone with a strong technical and methodical approach to any given task.

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have a real interest in IT and an aptitude for applying computing concepts and their skills to solve real problems.

The ideal student will have strong grades at either A-levels or BTEC, be studying a Computer Science, Computer Systems, Security or Networks-related degree and be on-track for a 1st or 2.1. This candidate must be graduating in 2023 and be enrolled in a degree course with an industrial placement.

The candidate must be highly organised, motivated, and willing to learn, whilst also being positive, with a can-do attitude and a love for problem-solving.
